What is a fascia?
Fascia or fascia boards are horizontal boards that run around the edge of the roof of a building. The purpose of a fascia is to overhang the walls of the building and bridge the gap between the walls and the roof of the building, and it helps to prevent water and penetration from wildlife into the roof and loft space. It also helps to improve the aesthetics of the building in comparison to cut ends of roof rafters for example. Guttering is attached to the fascias, so it provides a strong and stable surface for the guttering in order to withstand the weight of potential heavy rainfall.
What is a soffit?
Soffit or soffit boards are similar to fascias apart from the position they are attached to the walls. Instead of running parallel to the walls of the building, they are fixed at a 90 degree angle and they are fitted underneath the fascia boards to fill the space between the wall and the fascia. Soffit boards help to create a neater finished look, and help to prevent penetration from wildlife, as well as providing much-needed ventilation.
Benefits of Fascia
UPVC fascia boards are lightweight, strong, and are longwearing and therefore suitable for all weather conditions. Fascia boards have to be structurally strong and resilient as they are ordinarily used to attach the guttering and so need to be able to support heavy rain.
